I’m moving to Oahu Hawaii right before xmas 2009. Would a motorcycle be ok as my only means of travel?

I’m thinking more of the lines of getting one of those that are like 80% dirt bikes but are also street legal. Or should I just get a car?

There are a lot of motorcycles here and people ride them without any head or body protection; which is very dangerous and especially right now, we’ve had 11 motorcycle deaths so far this year. It does rain quite often but if that doesn’t bother you, then no problemo! You would have to be very cautious with the drivers here, they get very irritated with motorcycles and bicyclists, even though you have the same rights as vehicles. I’d say, if it’s more economical, then go for it. Just keep up with the flow of traffic! Malama Pono and welcome to Hawaii!

Parking in Honolulu, especially downtown, can be an expensive nightmare when metered or in a garage: cars, motorcycles, bikes and mopeds alike. Most parking complexes have spaces for motorcycles but if you buy a nice one, you might have to consider safe street parking locations. I’ve lived here for two years and own a car. Quiet a few people drive mopeds. They’re very noisy but usually range from $1-3k. Most people park them on the sidewalk, locked to a post with a nice heavy chain. I think that most places in Honolulu that are metered allow hybrid cars to park there for free of charge. A motorcycle would be fine but it rains a lot usually from September/October- April and might sprinkle every other day. What area of Honolulu are you moving to? I could suggest a motorcycle or car to you better if I knew the area. If you’ve got a garage at your place, then a get a car. The dealerships are closing and you’d get a good deal. Plus, it’s easier to get a long board to the beach in a car than on a moped, but I’ve seen it done.

    Get both.

I would ride a bike most of the time, then drive the island car (some old beater for $2000 is fine) when it’s raining or you get up too late or need a ton of groceries.

Motorcycle would be great, u get to ride in the carpool lanes. But, on a downside, motorcycle fatalities are surprisingly high this year, there were more than 7 already this year. Do some research on that…
