car rental or take the bus?
my husband, myself and our 18 month old will be traveling to oahu in may. we will be staying with my sister in honolulu, but they only have 1 car, and both my sister and her husband work.
I was wondering if it is better to rent a car or rely on the busses there?
we’ve been to hawaii 3 other times, but have never had to take public transportation around the island.
and i am wondering if most places are accessible by the bus? we dont want to be stranded somewhere.
please share youre experience.
the good
the bad
and the ugly of taking the bus on oahu.
The Good
-It’s one of the best bus systems in the US
-Reliable
-AC
The Bad
-You gotta wait
The Ugly
-There are some strange people on the bus. Really.
There are buses everywhere on Oahu and you can get around the island with the use of the bus, but it’s just having to transfer and remembering which bus to take to where that’s a headache. I’ve only ridden the bus twice and I’d rather take my car.
An 18-month-old shouldn’t be on a bus anyway. There are a lot of germs.

well i lived in hawaii most of my life but unfort i live in sh*tty las vegas now. but the bus is actually not too bad the number 2 takes you EVERYWHERE. and it usually comes every 15 minutes and it’s not scheduled like i noticed here. (im not sure where your from?) but i usually rent a car when i go back home bcz nonetheless it’s just more convienent
plus you have an 18 month old and people are germy do you really want to sit on a bus with a lot of people who may get your baby sick?

ive taken the bus for 12 years when I was a kid until I graduated from high school. I hate the bus. people are rude, it stinks, its dirty, people piss on the bus (ive seen this happen at night time), people spit on the bus, people come on the bus smelling like BO and smoke!
If you have a baby I suggest you rent a car it may be expensive but its much better than riding the bus. and you dont have to wait for the bus if you get a car your on your own time.

My husband and I went to Oahu last Feb. and we rented a car. I am glad we had the car because we could come and go as we pleased on our schedule. The only thing that was hard for us was finding our hotel the night we landed; it was a bit confusing in the Waikiki area with all the one way streets. If we go back to Oahu I will bring my GPS for the car.
Since you have a child I personally would rent a car. I don’t like having to rely on the bus to get where I need to go.
